A Birmingham cancer scientist has thanked local radio station listeners for their part in helping children who are battling against leukaemia.
Local researcher, Dr Sarah Lawson and the research team, Jenny Jesson and Lisa Eyre, expressed their gratitude to Heart fm listeners who raised £2,800 through the Station’s annual event Run for Home, for leading blood cancer charity, Leukaemia Research. They were joined by one of the station’s top DJs, Warren Moore, who unveiled a plaque at the Haematology Ward of Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The money is being used towards funding clinical research at the hospital, helping researchers develop a new method of counting cancer cells in children with acute leukaemia. Dr Lawson hopes this will help doctors determine the level of treatment required to stop the leukaemia cells from returning. She explained: “The money raised by the local radio listeners is funding research for ten children who have been diagnosed with leukaemia. These tests give us a more accurate picture of the cancer’s progression, which means we can adjust their treatment accordingly. We hope that this will give the children a much better chance of survival.” The research may also help doctors avoid treating children with unnecessarily strong drugs, preventing them from experiencing harmful side effects. Heart’s Warren Moore, who presents the Afternoon Show weekdays from 1-4pm represented radio station listeners. He said: “Our Run for Home event is a great way for local people to raise money for worthy local causes. We are delighted to have given £2,800 to Leukaemia Research and hope that it enables them to continue with all the great work they do.”
