*Open Days 2008

This October we hosted open days in London and Glasgow. These events give you the opportunity to gain an insight into the research we fund and meet some of our scientists.

London Open Day & South East Regional Meeting
Saturday 4th October at the Royal Free Hospital

London is currently receiving nearly £20 million of investment from Leukaemia Research. Our research is based at various centres around the city and includes a range of projects into the causes and development of blood cancers, with the aim of finding new diagnostic methods and curative treatments for these diseases. Our scientists at the Royal Free Hospital in London are focusing on various strategies to cure leukaemias and lymphomas including mobilising the immune system and using gene therapy. Much of this research has the potential to be carried into clinical trials in the very near future to benefit patients with blood cancers. Our scientists and haematologists will incorporate laboratory demonstrations to discuss the progress of their work.

Regional Fundraiser Annette How, who attended the event comments, "A wonderful day was had by all at this year's London Open Day. The scientists really made their research come to life by letting us look down microscopes at blood cells and showing us colourful images of chromosomes and DNA. It was a truly amazing experience."

Glasgow Open Day & Scottish Regional Meeting
Saturday 25h October at the Gartnavel Hospital

The Gartnavel Hospital in Glasgow is home to a new £3 million pound research facility: the Paul O’Gorman Research Centre. Further to this huge investment we are currently funding over £2.5 million worth of research in Glasgow. This includes breakthroughs into the root cause of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML); cancer stem cells. This research will not only increase hope of finding a cure for patients with CML, but possibly all blood cancers. Other research is focusing on the origins of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, the most common form of adult leukaemia, the development of Hodgkin’s lymphoma and the genetic basis of other lymphomas. Our scientists will present their research and explain how it is advancing towards finding cures for blood cancers. This will include an update on the childhood cancer MRD test trial for which Glasgow is a participating centre.

Regional Fundraiser Yvonne Dickson, who attended the event comments, "We all enjoyed the day and were really impressed by the research being carried out in Glasgow. The Leukaemia Research scientists did a wonderful job of explaining their work to us in simple terms, and this has motivated us to work even harder, continuing to raise the much needed funds for this research."
