*Oxford scientists are using cutting-edge technology to give hope to sufferers of a blood disease that is linked to leukaemia.

The team, based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, are using advanced microarray technology to examine the genetic factors involved in myelodysplasia (MDS), a cancer where blood cells do not develop normally.

Forty percent of MDS patients go on to develop leukaemia and it is hoped that the experts’ work will establish the risk MDS poses to a patient at an earlier stage, so treatment can be tailored accordingly.

There are many ways that local fundraising can ensure our continued support of such fruitful research, and a particularly popular way in the south east is through the pedal power of local Bikeathons. With events in Windsor, Southend, Woking, Kent and Hertfordshire, the locally-run events are raising hundreds of thousands of pounds every year.
