Bananaman, comic superhero and 80s TV star, has returned - but this time he's fighting against blood cancers, which affect 1 in 25 of the UK's population.
Ever alert for the call to action, Bananaman is asking UK shoppers to help Leukaemia Research beat blood cancers in their latest ‘ap-peel’ by visiting their local Argos store and buying a Bananaman Charm for a donation of £1.
Leukaemia Research is Argos’ charity partner and together they have raised almost £500,000, smashing the original target of £400,000 halfway through their year-long partnership.
Bananaman Charms are available in Argos stores from February to April and there are three to collect, which can be attached to mobile phones, bags and zips as a quirky accessory.
Each ‘charm’ also includes a banana-themed booklet with details on how to join the Banana Army, Leukaemia Research’s sports team, and take part in the largest charity programme of running, triathlon and cycling events for all ages and abilities. The Banana Army is named after their bright yellow T-shirts that stand out in a crowd - just like Bananaman!
Kate White, Director of Fundraising at Leukaemia Research said: "As well as raising vital funds, these Bananaman Charms will help us promote health and wellbeing to Argos’ customers by encouraging them to join our Banana Army and raise even more money. We can now support a special cytogenetic database, which will help Leukaemia Research record symptoms and treatments of different types of blood cancer to help spot patterns and make future treatment more effective. Thank you to Argos for giving Leukaemia Research this fantastic opportunity."
Lorna Liggett, Argos Community Affairs Manager, said: "Our customers will have nostalgic memories of Bananaman and their kids will want to put these funky charms on their phones and bags, so we hope to raise a good amount for our charity partner to help beat blood cancers. We want to thank all our customers for their continued fundraising support and hope they enjoy being part of the famous Banana Army as much as our staff do."
