Release Date: 20 February 2008

Students from the Air Cabin Crew course at Park Lane College Leeds presented a cheque for £893.63 to Leukaemia Research on 14th February, following months of fundraising in memory of Sarah Ramsden.

Sarah studied at Park Lane College Leeds on the BTEC National Award in Airline and Airport Operations whilst in remission for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Sarah achieved her dream of becoming a cabin crew member and, despite her medical history, achieved a permanent position with Jet2.com. After five months her cancer returned and she was unable to continue her job. She later lost her battle with cancer.

Sarah’s mother, Pat, has been working with students and tutors at the College since her daughter’s death in 2007; Pat also presented Leukaemia Research with a cheque for £3,000 alongside the students.

Pat and the Air Cabin students - Lyndsey Robinson, Kirsty Twitchett, Kim Rowe and Jodie Bennett - presented the cheque at the opening of the new Bexley Wing at St James' Hospital. The cheques were accepted on behalf of the charity by four of the Calendar Girls.

Also present at the event were Alan Ramsden (Sarah’s father), Thomas (Sarah's brother, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma five months prior to Sarah being diagnosed) Joshua Ramsden (Sarah's other brother), and a close friend of Sarah's.

Researchers at the event included Dr Andrew Jack, Head of the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (HMDS) Leeds, and Professor Eve Roman, Director of the Leukaemia Research Epidemiology and Genetics Unit, York, who talked about innovative new research into blood cancer.

Air Cabin Crew Programme Manager, Christine Bedford, said: "Sarah never spoke about her illness and always remained in high spirits, despite many hospital appointments. She was also a committed fund raiser for the Teenage Cancer Unit, something she undertook alongside her studies.

"Sarah was a pleasure to teach and when she lost her battle with cancer it was a tragic loss. Sarah has inspired her classmates and they are all determined to keep her memory alive and help other young people diagnosed with this terrible disease."
