Over a hundred Banana Army triathletes turned out in scenic Windsor to make the 2007 Nokia Royal Windsor triathlon a big success.
Despite the tricky obstacle of swans during the swim leg of the course, 110 members of our team crossed the finish line, and they are expected to have raised an impressive £40,000.
Leukaemia Research is the official charity for the Human Race series of athletic events, and Banana Army runners and triathletes have already turned out in force at this year’s Eton Supersprints and ASICS Breakfast run, two more of Human Race’s flagship races.
Among our runners who completed the course were Liz Halsted, who decided to support Leukaemia Research after she was touched by blood cancers a number of times in her life.
Liz said: "My cousin Richard was diagnosed with lymphoma when he was just 26 and died a year later. My friend Kate was told she also had lymphoma when she was 18, and despite her bravery, she died after two years of treatment.
“And then a close friend and my cousin’s brother-in-law lost their fights with aplastic anaemia, a type of blood cancer. Since signing up to support Leukaemia Research, I have also realised the charity doesn’t just research leukaemia, but all other blood cancers, which made me even more proud to be supporting them."
Simon Hall decided to support the charity through his athletic efforts after being personally touched by blood cancer. His grandma Alice lost her fight with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1997.
Simon said: "I decided to take up triathlon this year as I’m nearly 40 and have decided to change my lifestyle and take on a challenge. It’s also great to have the opportunity to support a charity that means a lot to me."
