After almost 50 years of working together to fight cancer, Leukaemia Research and Great Ormond Street Hospital have come together to give a special present to children fighting leukaemia.

Since 1960, Leukaemia Research has been funding research in a number of organisations including Great Ormond Street Hospital, helping to improve the lives of children with leukaemia and other blood cancers. Fifty years ago few children survived their leukaemia, now 8 out of 10 do.

Argos, multi-channel retailer and Leukaemia Research’s biggest corporate partner, donated £10,000 worth of products, including £2,000 worth of toys, from their new catalogue to the charity, following an on line competition called ‘Giant Jar’. Entrants to the competition were invited to view a silent comedy film before guessing how many products were inside the huge jar.

Leukaemia Research is using the donation from Argos to raise further funds for their life-saving research as the cancer charity decided to donate the toys to children with leukaemia on the Lion and Giraffe wards at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Jaimie Walnes, Head of Corporate and Trust Fundraising at Leukaemia Research said: "Argos' partnership with Leukaemia Research has been hugely successful so far raising an amazing £480,000 for our life-saving research. We are delighted to receive the Giant Jar items, which will be used to raise even more money to beat blood cancers. In addition to saving lives, it’s fantastic to be able to give the toys to children with leukaemia so that they can play with them whilst receiving treatment."

Tim Johnson, Director at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity said: "We are the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer and offer specialist children's health care. Through the Leukaemia Research partnership the children really benefit. We are very grateful for the donated toys - they will help to make children feel at home while they are undergoing treatment."

Leukaemia Research is Argos’ charity partner and the multi-channel retailer has smashed its £400,000 fundraising target, raising almost £480,000 for research into blood cancers including leukaemia, Hodgkin’s and other lymphomas and myeloma.
