| | Tommy Walsh and Wickes Tottenham store employee, Christina Davis. Release Date: 01 February 2008
Wickes colleagues are taking part in a fundraising campaign called ‘Go Without to Give Life’ in the second year of their charity partnership with Leukaemia Research. In order to raise vital funds for research into blood cancers, Wickes colleagues will be resolving to ‘Go Without’ something during 2008 (e.g. cigarettes, chocolate, tea, coffee etc.). They are either being sponsored or are donating the money they would have spent over the time period to Leukaemia Research.
Celebrity builder and Leukaemia Research supporter Tommy Walsh is backing the campaign and went down to visit his local Tottenham branch of Wickes to help kick-start the fundraising.
A popular item that the colleagues are planning to ‘go without’ is, of course, chocolate. Tommy showed his support for the abstaining chocoholics by taking his trademark hammer and saw to a massive bar of chocolate in front of them!
Tommy said: "It's absolutely fantastic that the Wickes colleagues are supporting Leukaemia Research with their vital work, it's for a great cause." Other Wickes colleagues are taking on more energetic challenges. Christina, who works at the Tottenham store, has resolved to ditch her bus pass and walk to work, donating the money she saves to the cancer charity."
Wickes colleagues plan to take part in many more events over the coming year, organising two national collection days for Leukaemia Research and entering corporate teams in the Banana Army, the charity’s running team.
Wickes stores will also get involved in Leukaemia Research’s President Sir Ian Botham’s upcoming nationwide charity walk this year. Wickes have raised three hundred thousand pounds so far for Leukaemia Research and are looking to raise well over half a million pounds by the end of 2008.
