Guidelines assist the practice of healthcare professionals" It is important to understand that, although guidelines represent the collected opinions of a group of experts on best clinical practice based on best available evidence, they are only guidelines. In most cases treatment will be based on guidelines, where these exist, but a clinician may decide that it is not in the best interests of a specific patient to be treated exactly, or even broadly, according to the guidelines.
