Simon Osborne

Release Date: 28th March 2002

A young man from Shropshire will be keeping an important promise when he sets out to kayak 3,000 miles around the entire coastline of the UK.

Simon Osborne, 22, from Shrewsbury, is undertaking this mammoth adventure in memory of his older brother Mark.

Mark was just 13 years old when he died of leukaemia in 1989. Simon is now looking to raise as much money as he can for the Leukaemia Research Fund (LRF).

“Losing my brother has given me a huge amount of motivation. I promised myself that I would do all I could to raise as much money as I could for the LRF,” he says.

“I only have to think about what he went through to put the size of my challenge into perspective.”

“Mark was a keen kayaker and thoroughly enjoyed trips to the Ardeche in France and to Scotland. What better way for me therefore to raise money for the LRF than by kayaking around the UK," he adds.

Simon has set himself the target of raising between £10,000 and £20,000 for LRF and is keen to get sponsorship from as many people as he possibly can. “Naturally, I am little bit nervous about this expedition but I know that will be all worthwhile if I can complete the route and more importantly reach my fundraising target.

Simon will be setting off on his journey from Aberystwyth on May 11th, and he will be heading north around mainland Britain in a clockwise direction. He hopes to complete the 3,000-mile paddle in around 750 hours of paddling over four months at an average of 8 hours a day.

“I need all the support I can get so please check out my website:- www.kayakingforcancer.co.uk

You can find out where I am each day and when I will be near you,” he adds.
