After raising over £150,000 to date for charity by taking on a 2,200km cycle challenge in July, ex-England footballer Geoff Thomas last night (Monday 26th September 2005) received a prestigious Variety Club Award for Outstanding Courage.
“I am honoured to have received this award,” says Geoff, 40, who was diagnosed with life-threatening chronic myeloid leukaemia in July 2003. “There are so many people I would like to thank, but I’d like to especially thank my family and friends who have been so understanding throughout my illness and during my cycling challenge.”
Geoff underwent a bone marrow transplant in January 2004 and has been in remission since last Christmas, when he was given permission by doctors to take on the physical demands of the astonishing challenge of cycling the 2,200-mile Tour De France route in just 21 days.
“I would like to share this award with the thousands of leukaemia sufferers in the UK, who are courageously battling with their blood cancers. I hope my story can give them hope and the determination to pull through, as well as inspire others to support the life-saving research funded by Leukaemia Research.”
Geoff accepted the award at the Variety Club’s 24th Annual Sports Awards held on Monday evening (26th September 2005). Sponsored by the Bank of Scotland, the event took place at The Royal Lancaster, London, where other top names from the sports world including John Motson and Lord Sebastian Coe received awards.
“The Variety Club is delighted to honour some of the country’s greatest sports personalities like Geoff, who have made an outstanding contribution to their individual sport,” says Anthony Harris, The Variety Club’s Chief Barker.
The latest total on Geoff’s “Taking on Le Tour” website stands at over £150,000. To make a donation and for more information on the challenge, including his daily diary updates, log on to www.geoff-thomas.com
