| | Release Date: 27th October 2004
Leading leukaemia charity, Leukaemia Research, is teaming up with Dairy Crest to launch a series of sponsored bike rides at schools across the UK.
Big Bikeathon 2005 - sponsored bike rides for children - has been designed to help schools promote healthy living whilst raising money for research into the most common form of childhood cancer. Dairy Crest has included information about the event on all its school milk packs which are delivered to more than one million children a week in the UK.
The event has the support of Match of the Day presenter and England football hero Gary Lineker, who is appealing for schools to get involved with the event. “We are hoping for a fantastic turnout from schools. It’s a really great way for schools to have a bit of fun whilst raising money for a really important cause,” says Gary, whose eldest son George was successfully treated for leukaemia when he was just a baby.
“Children all over the UK will be taking part throughout 2005 at different locations, cycling hard and hopefully raising loads of sponsorship money for Leukaemia Research and their school at the same time. The charity is offering to split the money raised 50/50 with all schools that organise their own Big Bikeathon!,” he adds. Schools really can make a difference by organising one of these events and you will get all the help you need from Leukaemia Research. The charity will provide all the materials such as sponsor forms, stickers and medals for the children.
Chris Munn, Marketing Manager at Dairy Crest’s Household Division, says :“All the money raised means that thousands of leukaemia patients young and old will benefit. It seems that everybody nowadays knows someone whose life has been affected by leukaemia - and the Big Bikeathon is a great way to raise the money so desperately needed for research, and have fun too!
“Dairy Crest is delighted to be supporting this wonderful event as part of its ongoing work with Leukaemia Research, for which the company raised more than £250,000 last year,” he adds.
