Intrepid pupils from Wolverhampton Grammar School proved there were no obstacles to going the distance for Leukaemia Research; they recently completed a coast-to-coast run of 192 miles! Gail Evans, a member of staff at the school, takes up the story:
“No amount of training could have prepared the students for the amazing experience that the Coast 2 Coast brought with it. After a sleepless night of bewildering excitement for the entire squad, they left their overnight destination in St Bees and headed for the sea. At 6am the team tie was dipped in the water along with ten pairs of toes and at that early hour in the morning the 192-mile run began. Team morale and spirit were felt by all - an extraordinarily strong partnership - encouraging one another where they found difficulty.
“The team made good time and pushed themselves to the limit, so much so they where running each half hour run faster than the previous runner before them. With brave faces and strong wills the running continued through the night. A mile from the final destination, the entire team got out to complete the last run together. Upon stopping at the sign for Robin Hood's Bay, the inevitable emotion and total elation began to appear in both the staff and pupils. The steep run down into the bay concluded with an array of very proud parents and friends.
“This is an amazing achievement, it is the strength and motivation which can be brought by others and the huge amount of fun that can be had, even when times are at their toughest. This was all made possible by our sponsors, teachers and parents in aid of Leukaemia Research. The Coast to Coast was an unforgettable experience, made possible by everyone working together.”
