| | London Bikeathon 2006 Release Date: 17th July 2006
Football hero Geoff Thomas and Leukaemia Research’s Chairman of Fundraising Alastair Campbell led 5,000 cyclists who pedalled the tenth London Bikeathon On Sunday 16 July.
Geoff, who last year took on the Tour De France route whilst in remission from chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), and Alastair led from the front and claimed to have ‘joint won’ the city route. Geoff then followed up finishing his first 26 miles by continuing on to complete the 52-mile challenge route.
It is hoped that the anniversary was not only marked by the record turnout of cyclists, but a record fundraising total, to push the total past the £2million mark raised for Leukaemia Research since the flagship cycling event was founded 10 years ago.
In the ten years since the London Bikeathon was started, the event has grown from a few hundred cyclists, to a large-scale event that attracts both novice and keen cyclists from London and beyond.
“The turnout this year was amazing, and it was great to see so many people enjoying cycling in aid of a good cause,” said Lucy Povey, London Bikeathon Manager.
“The growth of the London Bikeathon in 10 years has been phenomenal, and we’re hoping that with the continuing support of our fundraisers we can push on and raise even more money to support vital research.”
