Release Date: 11th July 2005

A Pimlico 71-year-old is taking to London’s streets by bike, to raise money for Leukaemia Research, the UK's leading blood cancer charity

Edward Nelson, an archivist for The Rural Housing Trust, says he’s going to take his time to cycle the 26-mile London Bikeathon route on Sunday 17th July 2005, while wearing a suit and bowler hat.

Leukaemia Research is a charity close to Edward's heart, after his sister, Judith – the Countess Balhurst, died of a blood disorder four years ago.

"I'm going to cycle at my own pace down to Mile End, where a friend will be waiting with champagne," says Edward.

"I'm hoping to make the experience a whole lot of fun, and hopefully draw attention to a very worthy charity," he adds.

Now in it's ninth year, the London Bikeathon has raised over £1.6million for Leukaemia Research. This year, the charity is hoping to attract over 4,000 people to take part and raise over £300,000 for research into leukaemia and related cancers of the blood.

The event is a great day out for the family, friends and colleagues. With food, refreshments and entertainment all day, it is a perfect way to spend the weekend, cheering on the cyclists.

Sir Trevor McDonald will be getting the ride off to a start at Ham Common and Emmerdale’s Bob Hope, Tony Audenshaw, will be entertaining the crowds at Royal Hospital Chelsea with his band. For more details about the event – log on to the website at www.londonbikeathon.co.uk.
