| | Madeleine Proctor Release Date: 6th March 2006
Leeds medical student Madeleine Proctor is to put her best foot forward to take on the Flora London Marathon for cancer charity Leukaemia Research, after her mum beat leukaemia for the second time.
Madeleine, 24, will be pounding the streets of London on Sunday 23rd April 2006 to celebrate her mum Marilyn fighting off a recurrence of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), a blood cancer that affects around 750 people in the UK each year.
“My mum was first diagnosed with CML when I was 14, but after a bone marrow transplant she went into remission. She recently relapsed again but after treatment her levels of leukaemia cells are thankfully now very low,” says Madeleine, who studies at Leeds University.
Madeleine, who is originally from Nottingham, has already raised hundreds of pounds for Leukaemia Research, the UK’s leading blood cancer charity, by running the BUPA Great North Run twice, as well as the Robin Hood half marathon.
“I decided to take on this bigger challenge to raise as much money as I can,” says Madeleine, whose mum will be there to support her on the day. “I honestly think that without all the work that Leukaemia Research has done my mum wouldn’t be alive today.”
As well as having her family and friends cheering her on, Madeleine will be running in good company as she passes by some of London’s most famous landmarks. As part of the Banana Army, Leukaemia Research’s TVTimes & Asics sponsored celebrity running team, she will be running alongside a variety of celebrities from programmes such as Emmerdale, Monarch of the Glen and The Bill.
Last year’s Flora London Marathon helped Leukaemia Research raise over £300,000 for vital research and this year promises to be even better. To sponsor Madeleine in her fundraising effort, please visit her online fundraising website at www.justgiving.com/maddyproctor
