York to host Annual Conference 2007
York to host Annual Conference 2007

Release Date: 3rd April 2006

York will welcome a host of celebrities including Yorkshire’s very own Calendar Girls when cancer charity, Leukaemia Research, comes to the historic city on 8th April 2006.

Supporters from across the UK will gather in the city for the charity’s Annual Conference to hear about the life-saving work being funded by the charity, as well as hearing about the real life experiences of some well-known names who have been affected by blood cancers. In particular the conference will focus on teenagers and young adults, as blood cancers remain the most common cause of non-accidental death in under 35s in the UK.

The Rylstone WI ladies, the Calendar Girls will be at the event to launch their new 2007 calendar, which is styled on the original Alternative WI calendar, which sparked the hit movie ‘Calendar Girls’. Miss February, Angela Baker, sadly lost her husband John to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and to date the Girls have raised over £1million for the charity.

“It is a great opportunity for everyone to find out more about the life saving research being funded by Leukaemia Research,” says Angela. “The charity has had such an impact in helping to save more lives from these punishing blood cancers and so we are hoping with the new calendar we can help raise another million – it would be fantastic.”

Former England footballer Geoff Thomas, who fought against leukaemia and then took on the Tour de France last year, will be at the event sharing his experiences of beating blood cancer and his the cycling challenge.

Also sharing his experiences of been diagnosed with life-threatening leukaemia, will be former rock star Floyd London who was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2004.

“It has been a rollercoaster of a ride, but I’m fighting back,” says Floyd, who is originally from Glasgow. “Not many people know that blood cancers like leukaemia are the most common cancer-killer in young adults.

“I decided to help raise awareness and money for Leukaemia Research so they can keep funding research to save lives like mine. So much more work is needed; I am lucky in that my cancer has responded to treatment – but other patients aren’t so lucky.”

A host of leading researchers will speak at the event taking part at the Moat House Hotel, including Professor Tim Eden, a leading expert on teenage cancers. He says: “It is very important to explain our research to the general public, and more specifically, to the people who raise vital money for Leukaemia Research, which allows us to continue our research.

“We want to be able to reassure fundraisers and patients we are making progress that will hopefully significantly increase the effectiveness of treatments for patients,” adds Professor Eden.
