| | Leukaemia Research offers career development and travel awards to scientists, clinicians and students pursuing a career in blood cancer research.
Bennett Fellowships in Experimental Haematology
These are the only UK awards dedicated to experimental haematology and are specifically designed to allow outstanding young UK-based clinical and non-clinical scientists to progress to independent investigator status. Applications should be submitted to Leukaemia Research by 1 December each year.
Non-Clinical Senior Fellowship. Candidates should have up to ten years’ post-doctoral experience. The fellowship is tenable in any appropriate UK laboratory and provides five years of personal support together with three years’ funding for one or two support posts and appropriate consumable costs.
Non-Clinical Junior Fellowship. Candidates should have up to six year's post-doctoral experience. The fellowship is tenable in any appropriate UK laboratory and provides five years of personal support together with a three-year research assistant post and appropriate consumable costs.
Clinical Senior Fellowship. This fellowship is offered at Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer grade as a two-stage award for PhD qualified candidates who have (or will shortly) complete specialist training (CCST). The first award is for three years. A further two years may be considered by peer review if appropriate.
Other non-clinical awards
Gordon Piller PhD Studentships. These four-year studentship awards offer an attractive stipend for the PhD student, plus fees and an allowance towards research costs. Up to four awards are made in October each year. Only current grantholders are invited to apply for this scheme.
Visiting Fellowships. Two-year fellowships are available for UK-based post-doctoral investigators under 35 years of age. We offer a European Fellowship and an International Fellowship, tenable in any accredited laboratory at a centre of excellence for haematological research.
Lectureships. Exceptionally, Leukaemia Research will provide three or five-year funding toward the establishment of a lectureship or senior lectureship. There must be a proven strategic need for the establishment of the lectureship together with a commitment from the host university to fund the post after the Leukaemia Research award finishes. The preferred option is for a phased handover of funding to the university during the period of the award. Applicants must contact the Scientific Director Dr Shabih Syed (scientific@lrf.org.uk) before any application can be considered.
Other clinical awards
Elective Bursary. Up to four travel awards of £1,000 are made in February each year for final year clinical electives. Candidates must be affiliated to a UK Medical School.
Clinical Research Training Fellowships. This award is for clinicians in training to obtain a MD or PhD. MD fellowships are for two years and are intended to encourage translational research. PhD fellowships are for three years to provide training in more fundamental research.
Clinician Scientist. This award is in partnership with the Academy of Medical Sciences and is part of a national scheme to promote recruitment into academic medicine. The award is for four years at SpR grade. Candidates must have completed (or will shortly complete) a PhD/DPhil and will combine research with the completion of specialist training. Awards are made in October each year.
Visiting Fellowships. Two-year fellowships are available for UK-based clinical post-doctoral investigators under 35 years of age. We offer a European Fellowship and an International Fellowship, tenable in any accredited laboratory at a centre of excellence for haematological research.
