Therapeutic Options for Malignant Haematological Disorders (theory)

Hosted by the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Social Care, Napier University
MSc level 11 (20 SCQF/ 10 ECTS credits)

This is a one-trimester module for nurses to run annually. The module aims to critically explore current issues in haematology cancer care to inform your clinical practice. It will deliver current evidence based content on the management of leukaemia, lymphomas and myelomas including the process of transplantation. The module will utilise case studies to help engage you in reflection and critical thinking about the patient and family experience. RCN Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant forum

The day will include a programme about specialist blood component requirements for transfusion; understanding and interpreting blood results; nurse management implications of administration of Rituximab for CLL; and the management of the unrelated donor. Mouthcare: How to maintain a healthy mouth in all patients

Hosted by St Nicholas Hospice, Bury St Edmunds
Oral care remains one of the most important issues for patients being treated in different haematological settings. Daily assessment and evaluating the oral cavity should be part of nursing practice. Nurses still find this a ongoing dilemma for individual patients. The 2-hour course will be led by Corinne Revens, Quality Care Development Facilitator and she will be assisted by Fiona Ritchie, Healthcare Manager for RIS Products. The session will cover assessment, prevention and treatment. There will also be a discussion on a new planned assessment tool and care guidelines. This session will be of interest to nurses working in oncology, haematology and bone marrow transplantation.

EBMT (UK) NAP Group Meeting

Hosted by the EBMT UK Nurses and Allied Professionals Group
The programme includes disease development, specific clinical management and nurse education issues in haematology nursing. Speakers include Zuyi Lim from Kings College Hospital, London presenting MDS; J Reed on the rehabiliation of paediatric patients with neurological damage following haematopoietic stem cell transplantation and Caroline McCaughey form Belfast City Hospital on human patient simulation in haematology nurse education.

Cancer Nursing 2009

Hosted by the Nursing Times magazine
This conference looks at the cancer reform strategy, its impact on nursing and how it will affect nurses working in cancer care. Topics include the implementation of the strategy; findings emerged in the report from the National Chemotherapy Advisory Group; and case studies from pioneering cancer nursing. There will also be a discussion on measuring nursing with the introduction of metrics in healthcare. Speakers include Shelly Dolan, Chief Nurse, from the Royal Marsden Hospital and Tonia Dawson, Nurse Director from the Anglia Cancer Network.
