| | | | Every year we organise events for supporters and patients to find out more about us and our research. Everyone is welcome and all events are free of charge.
 | Open Days 2008 |
This October we are hosting open days in London and Glasgow. These events give you the opportunity to gain an insight into the research we fund and meet some of our scientists. This part of the day is scheduled from 10am – 2pm. Both events will also incorporate a Regional Meeting from 2.15 – 4.15pm.
London Open Day & South East Regional Meeting Saturday 4th October at the Royal Free Hospital |
London is currently receiving nearly £20 million of investment from Leukaemia Research. Our research is based at various centres around the city and includes a range of projects into the causes and development of blood cancers, with the aim of finding new diagnostic methods and curative treatments for these diseases. Our scientists at the Royal Free Hospital in London are focusing on various strategies to cure leukaemias and lymphomas including mobilising the immune system and using gene therapy. Much of this research has the potential to be carried into clinical trials in the very near future to benefit patients with blood cancers. Our scientists and haematologists will incorporate laboratory demonstrations to discuss the progress of their work.
Glasgow Open Day & Scottish Regional Meeting Saturday 25h October at the Gartnavel Hospital |
The Gartnavel Hospital in Glasgow is home to a new £3 million pound research facility: the Paul O’Gorman Research Centre. Further to this huge investment we are currently funding over £2.5 million worth of research in Glasgow. This includes breakthroughs into the root cause of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML); cancer stem cells. This research will not only increase hope of finding a cure for patients with CML, but possibly all blood cancers. Other research is focusing on the origins of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, the most common form of adult leukaemia, the development of Hodgkin’s lymphoma and the genetic basis of other lymphomas. Our scientists will present their research and explain how it is advancing towards finding cures for blood cancers. This will include an update on the childhood cancer MRD test trial for which Glasgow is a participating centre.
