*These are exciting times for Leukaemia Research in Scotland. Our Chairman of Fundraising Alastair Campbell launched the new VisitScotland Great Trail Runs IN June 2006, and Leukaemia Research became the new charity partner of Scotland’s largest mass cycling event, Pedal For Scotland.

Scottish fundraisers are busy supporting the cutting edge work continuing in labs in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen, which is giving hope to blood cancer patients across the UK.

Thanks to their efforts, a lifesaving test which is being piloted in Glasgow received a further cash injection of £1.7million. The test, which is the centrepiece of a major trial in the UK, ensures the accurate detection of minute numbers of leukaemia cells (minimal residual disease – or MRD) that remain after treatment but cannot be detected under the microscope.

The MRD test has been part of the national childhood leukaemia trial (UKALL 2003) for the past three years and has been enabling doctors to select which patients are at high risk of relapse and which children could actually be cured with significantly less chemotherapy.
