*Fundraisers have their heads shaved at their Walkabout pub in aid of Leukaemia Research. Walkabout Inns, the Australasian pub chain, have supported Leukaemia Research since 2001.

On sunday 12th September, people in Plymouth were persuaded to shave their heads at their Walkabout pub in aid of Leukaemia Research.

Local firefighters and bobbies were amongst those who chopped off their locks to help raise hundreds of pounds for vital research into leukaemia. Walkabout staff also walked around the town asking for support and lining up daring volunteers to take part. In return, as well as raising money for a worthwhile cause, everyone who raised money by having their head shaved was rewarded with a pint and sandwich on the house.

“The event was a big hit and raised over £2000 for Leukaemia Research. At the same time as raising money for a good casue, everyone had a bit of fun,” says Scott Hempel, bar manager at Walkabout Plymouth.

The idea of a mass head shave has proved popular in Australia where millions of pounds has been raised for leukaemia charities. Shearing off the hair, local hairdressers Partners Hair Studio made it as painless but as fun as possible. Local band, the Diamond Geezers played to keep volunteers and spectators entertained.

Walkabout Inns, the Australasian pub chain, have supported Leukaemia Research in the UK since 2001. To date they have raised over £50,000 from a whole range of fundraising activities including collections in their pubs during sports events, summer BBQs and party nights. Last year they ran a Beach Babes and Surf Dudes national competition, judged by Phil Tufnell, adding thousands of pounds to their fundraising total and spreading the experience of the truly Awesome Spirit of Australia.
