| | Argos partnership closes with a record-breaking total
After a hugely eventful year, our successful partnership with Argos has just come to a close with the phenomenal total of £924,213.00.
Argos staff have done an amazing job fundraising over the past 12 months; smashing their £400,000 annual total in just six months and then going on to more than double it over the course of the partnership. Their commitment, energy and dedication in helping us fund the fight against blood cancers has been fantastic.
Supported by dedicated Leukaemia Research volunteers, catalogue launches in July 2007 and January 2008 raised a combined total of over £45,000. Argos customers have shown their generosity by raising over £85,000 from the Argos ‘Tick to Give’ scheme -a option to add a donation to their purchase.
As well as taking part in Leukaemia Research’s Banana Army events, Argos staff have organised skydives, head shaves and Dragon Boat races as well as raffles, tombolas and sponsored events. The fervour for fundraising was not exclusive to store staff – the Argos directors rolled up their sleeves and got involved with the first ever Director’s Challenge, raising over £45,000 through challenges they organised, such as a 200-mile cycle ride from Newcastle to Edinburgh!
Whilst the partnership is now at an end, the money raised by Argos staff will continue to make a huge difference to us and patients with cancers of the blood. It will fund a cytogenetics database, which will hold data about leukaemia patients. By pooling this data, our researchers hope to be able to identify common genetic abnormalities, which may cause acute leukaemia. By understanding the causes, we can aim to improve survival rates and ultimately prevent leukaemia as well as contributing to the understanding of how other cancers develop.
