Release Date: 31 July 2008

Cyclists in Essex are being urged to get on their bikes and head over to one the county’s new cycling towns. Southend-on-Sea, which has recently been designated as a cycling town by the government will hold its 14th annual Bikeathon on Sunday 7th September, to raise funds for leading blood cancer charity Leukaemia Research.

Starting and finishing from Shoebury East Beach, Southend-on-Sea, the event will run from 9am. Entrants can choose to do a 13 or 26-mile route.

The riders will go along the Seafront, through quiet country lanes and go back to the Shoebury East Beach.

The Bikeathon is signposted and marshalled, with refreshment stops, and all riders receive a free t-shirt and medal.

Terry Joyce, Southend Bikeathon organiser says:
"The Bikeathon is a perfect opportunity to get out and get fit. Last year’s event was a really fun day out and a big success, and we’re hoping for even better this year.

"All money raised by the Southend Bikeathon will help to make a difference to the lives of those affected by leukaemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers.

"One of the greatest achievements in medicine has been the transformed outlook for children diagnosed with leukaemia; in 1960, when the charity was founded, only 1 or 2% survived - now that figure is about 80%."

Trophies, certificates and sweat shirts will be awarded to those raising the most money in each category and who have paid in by the 31st October 2008.

For more information and to register please contact the Southend Bikeathon Co-ordinator, Matt Short, on 020 7269 9009 or email mshort@lrf.org.uk. Entry is available online here
