Tony Audenshaw
Tony Audenshaw

Release Date: 26 Sept 07

Emmerdale’s Bob Hope, aka popular actor Tony Audenshaw, has put in a double appearance at the BUPA Great North Run on 30 September 2007 in aid of Leukaemia Research, the UK's leading blood cancer charity.

In addition to running the race, Tony also performed with his band 'White Van Man' during the day. The set list, in tribute to the 1,600 members of the charity’s 'Banana Army', included ‘Banana Splits’ and ‘I’m a Banana’ - a witty rewording of the Monkees’s ‘I’m a believer’.

Tony, who has been running for Leukaemia Research for seven years, was initially recruited to the ‘Banana Army’ by fellow Emmerdale star Chris Chittell, who plays Eric Pollard.

Tony says: "When I started Emmerdale, Chris asked if I ran at all and then encouraged me to take part in charity events as part of the TV Times team to help raise money for Leukaemia Research. I’ve enjoyed taking part in the Great North Run, and love the atmosphere of it; it’s a fantastic event.

“Training has gone ok, as I run regularly, and I hope to beat 1 hour and 30 minutes. This year, I’ve managed to convince the band’s lead guitarist ‘The Twad’ to run as well."

Tony ran with 1,600 others as part of the Leukaemia Research ‘Banana Army’ team, which is sponsored by TV Times and Asics.

Kate White, Director of Fundraising at Leukaemia Research says: "We’re grateful for Tony’s support as part of our ‘Banana Army’ running team, which will be out in full force this year in their famous yellow T-shirts. He is joined by other celebrity runners from Emmerdale, Coronation Street and other leading TV programmes."
