Release Date: 26 November 2007

An annual Christmas concert for an internationally-acclaimed south wales choir will be extra special this year as it marks 25 years of raising money for Leukaemia Research, the UK's leading blood cancer charity.

The Morriston Orpheus Choir has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds since it held its first fundraising concert for the charity in 1982 at the University Hospital of Wales. This year’s concert is being held at the now regular venue of St. David’s Hall in Cardiff on 8th December and will feature the Trethomas Machen Band, and the choir of Ysgol Cerdd in Ceredigion.

The concert will also be special for another friend of the Morriston Orpheus Choir, Mike Peters from The Alarm, who suffered from leukaemia himself.

Much has changed since the Morriston Orpheus Choir, which is based in Swansea but has members from across South Wales, first took to the stage in aid of Leukaemia Research a quarter of a century ago.

Veteran chorister Evan Roberts, originally from North Wales and now living in Dunvant, Swansea, has attended the concert annually since 1982 and has some very special memories:

“It is wonderful to see how the concert has grown over the years, and now takes place at one of Cardiff’s top venues.

“We are delighted to have been able to support the excellent work of Leukaemia Research over the years and I’m certainly aiming to be supporting this worthy cause when we celebrate the 30th anniversary in five years time!"

Mike Peters said: "As a Leukaemia survivor myself, I owe my life to the work of Leukaemia Research which the Morriston Orpheus have supported through their hard work. The 'Rituximab' drug that keeps me alive, has only been available in recent years and is a result of the research work the Morriston Orpheus have supported through their generosity."

Concert organiser and Regional Fundraiser for Leukaemia Research, Gillian Bond, says: "We are very grateful for the support we’ve received over the last 25 years from the Morriston Orpheus Choir. Their wonderful evenings of music help us to raise much-needed money to help beat blood cancers."

The concert starts at 7.00 pm and tickets can be obtained from St David’s Hall, Cardiff on 029 2087 8444. Anyone wishing to attend the concert can contact Gill Jones on 029 2062 8696 or e mail gandt88@hotmail.co.uk for more information.
