Birkenhead Argos staff and customers are currently top fundraisers for charity Leukaemia Research, across all of Argos’ 670-plus UK stores. And the store in Birkenhead, Merseyside, will kick off celebrations to mark the leading multi-channel retailer Argos raising half a million pounds across the UK just seven months into its year-long partnership with the leading blood cancer charity.
The Birkenhead community are a shining example of the successful charity partnership, raising £9,000 through a variety of fundraising activities. These included customer raffles with a Liverpool shirt signed by the entire team going for £3,500, and a packaged giveaway of electrical Argos goodies fetching £2,000.
Birkenhead store manager Andrea Pemberton is determined to reach £10,000 for Leukaemia Research before the partnership ends in July this year. Andrea says: "We are immensely proud of the effort that all of the UK’s Argos stores have put into this charity partnership. We really admire Leukaemia Research and have given it our all when fundraising for them this year. It has brought everyone working in the store closer together and we’ve had a great time raising money for such a great charity."
Andrea is also quick to single out the efforts of local volunteers Ernie and Joyce Macaulay from Leukaemia Research’s Wirral Branch, which has been raising funds for the charity for over 35 years. Ernie and Joyce, who were guests of honour at the store event, praised the Birkenhead staff and customers for their marvellous and enthusiastic fundraising efforts.
With just under five months of the partnership to go there is still plenty happening in the area to catch the eye. This includes a sponsored in-store cycle, where every member of staff will be looking to raise £1 for every 1 mile cycled, and a sponsored 15-mile walk along the Wirral coast.
Argos’ fundraising efforts for Leukaemia Research will support a special cytogenetic database, which will help record symptoms and treatments of different types of blood cancer to help spot patterns and make future treatment more effective.
