Sutton Coldfield resident Kevin Moloney plans to swim the English Channel at the end of July in memory of his sister and in support of cancer charity Leukaemia Research.
Kevin says: "My beautiful sister Karen died of leukaemia in 1974 aged 21, which is why I’ve chosen to swim for Leukaemia Research. I have been a regular platelet donor for some years but I wanted to do more. Taking on the Channel swim means I can do something for Karen and fulfil a lifetime ambition at the same time.
“I recently learned that a friend of mine has contracted leukaemia and this has made me even more determined to do it. After all, Ferries are for wimps!"
Kevin started his serious training in April with a trip to Malta with Swimtrek, who was inspired by their motto ‘Ferries are for Wimps.’ Along with other Channel hopefuls, Kevin was put through four days of hard training in Malta, culminating in a six-hour qualifying swim in 16-degree water.
Since then, he has spent most weekends travelling to Dover Harbour, for open water swimming practice. Kevin has completed over 100 hours of cold water training, building up stamina and endurance for the challenge.
The English Channel swim is around 21 miles, point to point, but with the currents and tides the final distance is closer to 30 miles. The challenge will take around 15 hours to complete, dodging tankers and ferries on the way!
To support Kevin’s Channel swim, you can donate online via his justgiving website or contact Emma Johndrow, Midlands Fundraiser for Leukaemia Research on 01530 264373.
