New York is set for a ‘British Invasion’ from the Banana Army as celebrity and personal supporters are flying to the ‘Big Apple’ to take on Sunday’s ING New York Marathon in aid of Leukaemia Research, the UK’s leading blood cancer charity.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the Leukaemia Research 'Banana Army' team, the charity has selected 25 runners to represent the team at Sunday’s New York Marathon for the first time. Sunday’s ‘Banana Army’ cohort of charity supporters with personal reasons for taking part will include British TV star Heather Peace.
Heather, who has starred in Ultimate Force, The Chase, The Bill and London’s Burning, has supported Leukaemia Research for six years. She became involved through the influence of former ‘TV Times’ sales director Ken Lomas and his wife Barbara, who lost their daughter Karen to leukaemia in 1982. In early 2007, Barbara Lomas lost her fight against cancer so Heather is also running in her memory.
In addition to running the race, the 25 ‘Banana Army’ entrants will also meet runners from Leukaemia Research’s partner organisation in the US, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to enjoy their ‘Pasta Party’ and other after-race events.
Cathy Gilman, Chief Executive at Leukaemia Research says: "We’re delighted that our ‘Banana Army’ running team will take part in Sunday’s event, as we celebrate the team reaching its 25th anniversary. We’d like to thank our official sponsors TV Times and Asics, the individuals who are sponsoring our runners and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for their generous hospitality during our time in the US. Hopefully, we’ll hear some fantastic cheers as the runners complete the course and arrive at the finish line in Central Park!"
