Andrew Wessels, 30, launched his Race for Millions campaign this week with Sir Victor Blank, chair of Great Universal Stores, and Will Greenwood, England rugby world cup hero.
Andrew with his Race for Millions campaign is attempting to break the all time Guinness World Record for raising the most money for charity by running a Marathon by any individual. In fact, Andrew aims to raise around £2 million by pounding the streets in this year’s London Marathon on Sunday 17 April 2005. The current record stands at £1.13 million raised by London Marathon Director, John Spurling, in 1999.
Andrew’s campaign will benefit four charities equally: Leukaemia Research, Brainwave, WellBeing of Women and The Prince’s Trust . Andrew was inspired to fundraise after his mother suffered severe brain damage after a cycle racing accident.
Andrew has some big names rooting for him. His ambitious fundraising plan has won the support of the London Stock Exchange, which is supporting him and to date he has already raised almost £100,000.
Race for Millions is approaching every company in the FTSE100 and FTSE 250 directly, asking for financial support.
Additionally, the campaign has an impressive executive committee including top business figures, such as Ian MacLaurin, Charles Dunstone and David Ross – as well as Sir Victor Blank.
With only three months to go, the campaign is busy encouraging sponsors large and small.
“This is an impressive campaign with a simple plan, from an ordinary young man with an extraordinary idea,” says Ian MacLaurin. “I urge you to support him.”
