A Cambridge woman is hoping to pay tribute to her Dad who died of leukaemia when she takes on the Syntegra Edinburgh Marathon this month.
Mandy Williams, 40, is hoping to tackle the 26-mile challenge on Sunday 12th June 2005 for Leukaemia Research – the UK’s leading blood cancer charity. She says it is her way of paying tribute to her Dad, Mick Stratford, who died of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in 2003.
"Dad was 65 when he was diagnosed with AML in January 2001. He underwent treatment as part of a research trial and was in remission for 14 months," says Mandy. "Sadly he relapsed in early 2003 and died months later in July."
"It was a devastating blow to all the family, but we all have our particular memories for which we will always be grateful. For me this included his witnessing my marriage and seeing my newborn daughter Lucy just 10 days before his death."
In its third year, the Syntegra Edinburgh Marathon takes in all the sights of the historic city, including Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Yacht Britannia and the Firth of Forth. Pipers will line the final mile to play the runners to the finish in Holyrood Park.
"Since losing Dad I've learnt that leukaemia can affect anyone, at any stage of their life. The work Leukaemia Research does plays an important role in helping find ways of saving lives and so I am proud to be running for them," adds Mandy.
Mandy will be rallying the support of friends, colleagues and family in an attempt to raise over £2,000 to help in the battle against leukaemia. To donate visit www.justgiving.com/mandysrun
As well as having her family and friends cheering her on the day, Mandy will be running in good company as she takes to the streets of Edinburgh. As part of the Leukaemia Research TVTimes & Asics Banana Army running team, Mandy will be running alongside hundreds of Banana Army runners, who hope to raise a total of £15,000 for the charity.
