The new Leukaemia Research Paul O’Gorman Centre
The new Leukaemia Research Paul O’Gorman Centre

Release Date: 29th March 2005

A new brochure highlighting the pioneering work of Leukaemia Research in Scotland has just been published. Research teams from across the region are leading the fight against leukaemia, lymphoma and related blood cancers that affect some 2,000 people in Scotland in each year.

With a foreword by Liz McColgan, Patron of the sponsored Leukaemia Research running team, the brochure introduces some of the projects to which Leukaemia Research has already committed more than £9million over the next five years.

"The brochure is designed to give a flavour of the important research carried out by Leukaemia Research on the public's behalf. There are still many unanswered questions and there is still a lot more work to do but we are making progress," said Liz.

Research teams in Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Glasgow are working closely with medical teams at Scotland’s major treatment centres. As the city of physician John Hughes Bennett who first described leukaemia in 1845, Edinburgh has always played a leading role in leukaemia research. Dr Lesley Forrester, Group Leader of a project funded by Leukaemia Research, and her team are investigating the complex workings of the body’s blood cells.

"Using stem cells, we are studying the subtle genetic signals that stimulate the production of different blood cells.

"Edinburgh has developed into one of the leading centres for stem cell research across the world. We are part of a team of experts providing the answers to some very important questions," she said.

The brochure also celebrates the work of volunteers and supporters in Scotland who raise money to fund this vital work.
