An Oxfordshire brewery’s tireless fundraising efforts for charity have been recognised by having a prestigious research grant named in their honour.
Hook Norton Brewery and the community in Hook Norton, Oxon, have been supporting Leukaemia Research, the UK’s leading blood cancer charity, for over 20 years. Their support began after the current managing director at the brewery, James Clarke, sadly lost his sister Victoria to leukaemia in 1986.
In recognition of their continued commitment to the charity, Leukaemia Research has dedicated a recent research grant to the community. The Hook Norton Fellowship has been awarded to Oxford doctor, Dr Graham Collins.
Based at the Institute of Molecular Medicine at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, Dr Collins is carrying out crucial research into one of the most common forms of lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which affects 1,400 people in the UK each year.
“The Clarke family, Hook Norton Brewery and the community in Hook Norton have all been fantastic in supporting Leukaemia Research over the years,” says Cathy Gilman, Director of Fundraising at Leukaemia Research. “Their efforts have helped us bring hope to thousands of blood cancer sufferers and their families across the UK, and this is our way of saying thank you.”
Dr Collins, 31, is part of a team headed by leading experts Professor David Mason and Dr Teresa Marafioti. Thanks to the £168,000 research grant, they hope to better understand the DNA abnormalities in the cancerous cells of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, using state-of-the-art molecular biological techniques.
“Previous research carried out has highlighted a number of genes as abnormal in patients with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Our research is evaluating each of these gene abnormalities to see whether they play a key part in the development of this disease,” says Dr Collins.
James Clarke, Managing Director at Hook Norton Brewery, says: “We are honoured to have this fellowship dedicated to the Hook Norton community. My family have may started the fundraising, but it is the local community who continue to work wholeheartedly to raise funds for Leukaemia Research.
“We are confident that the money raised will help Leukaemia Research in its aim to find the cures and improve treatments for these punishing blood cancers.”
