Towcester dad David Cannon, who has beaten a blood cancer, is taking on the Flora London Marathon with the help of England cricketer Michael Vaughan to raise vital cash for Leukaemia Research.
In November 2004, David, 38, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a blood cancer that affects around 1,400 people in the UK each year.
“When I was told I had Hodgkin’s lymphoma, I didn’t know much about the disease, but I tried to face my diagnosis with a positive attitude – I just got on with it,” says David, who is a key account manager for sports product company Unicorn.
“After six months of chemotherapy, I was in remission by June last year. An experience like that changes you and so now I want to help fund the research to help save even more lives from this terrible cancer.”
After deciding to take on the 26-mile race, which takes place on 23rd April 2006, David’s line of work meant he was able to gain sponsorship pledges from England cricketing and Ashes heroes Michael Vaughan, Steve Harmisson and Marcus Trescothick.
“Michael Vaughan said I will get twenty pounds more if I finish under four and a half hours, so that’s something to aim for,” adds David. “My friend Duncan, who I am running with, is definitely going to have to keep me going for the last ten miles or so though!”
As well as having his wife Emma and daughters Lauren (aged four) and Hannah (aged two) cheering him on the day, David will be running in good company as he passes by some of London’s most famous landmarks. As part of the Banana Army, Leukaemia Research’s TVTimes & Asics sponsored celebrity running team, he will be running alongside a variety of celebrities from programmes such as Emmerdale, Monarch of the Glen and The Bill.
Last year’s Flora London Marathon helped Leukaemia Research raise over £300,000 for vital research and this year promises to be even better. To sponsor David and Duncan in their fundraising efforts, please visit www.justgiving.com/daveandduncan
