Cricket legend Ian Botham today (Thursday 27th April 2006) announced he is to embark on one final walk to raise funds for teenagers and young adults with cancer.
In October 2006, former England cricketer and national hero, Ian Botham, will dust off his walking boots for one last journey to raise funds for two cancer charities – Leukaemia Research and Teenage Cancer Trust.
The cricket legend’s 11th charity walk will see him spend nine days covering all points of the compass including Belfast, Edinburgh, Cambridge and Southampton, stopping off along the way in other cities where both charities have projects. To date, Ian has raised over £8million from his charity walks and in his fiftieth year hopes to make a difference to thousands more young cancer patients.
The money raised will be split between two charities. Leukaemia Research, of which Ian is currently President, funds essential research and Teenage Cancer Trust, which provides special units in NHS hospitals for teenagers with cancer which are boosting survival rates.
More young people die from blood cancers than any other cancer and every day six teenagers and young adults are diagnosed with cancer in the UK.
Both charities are desperately in needs of funds to help them carry on their vital research and specialised cancer units, which one day might lead to the beating of this cancer and many other forms of cancer.
Beefy says: “Be as generous and supportive as you can, we are winning this battle but it can only be completely defeated with your support.”
Freddie Flintoff says: “Beefy’s one of my childhood heroes. It’s an absolute pleasure for me to be involved in any way shape or form with this last walk. I can’t wait.”
The walk will start on 9th October and finishes on 17th October. For the latest news on Ian’s walk log on to www.bothamwalk.com. Ian’s route is as follows:
October 9th - Belfast, Glasgow October 10th - Edinburgh, Newcastle October 11th - Leeds, Manchester October 12th - Liverpool, Sheffield October 13th - Nottingham, Leicester October 14th - Birmingham, Cardiff October 15th - Bristol, Southampton October 16th - Oxford, Cambridge October 17th - London
Ian will be walking through two cities on each day and each walk will start and finish at a Marks and Spencer store and will cover all Leukaemia Research centres and Teenage Cancer Trust Units and developments. Ian will be transferred between cities by helicopter, which has been donated for use during the walk.
