BATTERSEA adventurer Tom Day is taking on his most daring charity challenge to date – attempting to drive 3,000 miles from ‘Home to Rome’ in a battered Citroen BX, as part of an epic trip to raise funds for Leukaemia Research.
Tom, 29, is part of one of over a hundred crazy driver teams from all over the UK taking on the ‘banger rally’, which starts on Friday 28th October 2005. Starting off in Calais, the 3,000-mile road trip will end four days later in Rome. He hopes to raise over £1,000 for the blood cancer charity, in the first of a series of big fundraising challenges he has planned.
Drivers have to buy a ‘banger’ for £100 or under and add personalised paintwork and accessories ready for the rally, which will stop off in Monte Carlo and Venice as well as the historic Italian capital, Rome, where teams will either sell or scrap their vehicles.
“Finding a car under £100 that had passed an MOT was pretty difficult, but in the end I decided to go for the Citroen BX – though I have since been told that out of four past BX drivers, only one made it to Rome with their car!” says Tom, who runs sports adventure company ‘8th Day UK’.
If driving the cars that are admittedly past their best isn’t enough of a test, at each day’s stop on the journey, wacky challenges will be set by the organisers to further test the sanity of race participants.
“I was looking for something a bit different to take on and this certainly is it!” says Tom. “I'm delighted that by participating in such a fun event can also a help Leukaemia Research – a charity that does so much vital work and makes a difference to people's lives.”
Next year, Tom is planning to take on a ‘triple whammy’ of gruelling athletic events to raise even more money for Leukaemia Research, starting with the Six Foot marathon in the Blue Mountains of Australia, then the Flora London Marathon and finally the Nice Ironman triathlon.
