Release Date: 22nd September 2005

Over a hundred salons across the UK will be taking part in Alternative Hair Day for charity Leukaemia Research, making it the UK’s first-ever national awareness campaign bringing together the hair industry.

On Saturday 1st October, salons will take part in Alternative Hair Day when they will be offering customers the chance to help in the fight against blood cancers. Salon activities across the country will include the chance to win a cut and colour with the top stylist and for every appointment booked on the day, selected salons will donate 10% to Leukaemia Research.

“It’s great that so many salons are helping us raise awareness of leukaemia and the work we do,” says Cathy Gilman, Director of Fundraising at the charity, which depends entirely on voluntary donations.

“In the 1960s if your child was diagnosed with leukaemia there was little hope of survival. Today, thanks to decades of research, children face a survival rate of 7 in 10. But the fight is still on as we want to make that 10 out of 10,” she adds.

One of the UK’s top hair stylists, Tony Rizzo, from Sanrizz International Hair Salon who are leading the national effort, says: “Having lost my two-year-old son to leukaemia, Leukaemia Research is a charity close to my heart. I'm delighted top names like Schwarzkopft Professional and Bed Head are joining in and supporting us on the first ever Alternative Hair Day.”

The day takes place during Leukaemia Research Awareness Week, which runs from 24th September to 1st October 2005. Throughout the week voluntary fundraisers, including supporters from the charity’s Branches across the UK, will be raising awareness of blood cancers, which currently affect 110,000 people in the UK.

Various events will take place during the week ranging from sponsored head shaves to leg waxing, as well as the sale of special awareness week goodies. To find out more about what’s happening in your area, email ahd@lrf.org.uk, call 020 7405 0101 or log onto www.lrf.org.uk/ahd
