Release Date: 15th June 2005

A Putney woman is taking on the Royal Windsor Triathlon this month to raise money for the UK’s leading blood cancer charity.

Janet Simpson, 40, from Hotham Road is planning to tackle the swim, cycle and run challenge on Sunday 19th June 2005 for Leukaemia Research. She says it is her way of making a contribution to medical research.

"My close friends Michael and Emma O’Kane discovered that their son Oscar had leukaemia three years ago, when he was just aged one," says Janet, an IT consultant. "It was a complete shock to us all. Michael and Emma have been through such a difficult time. Oscar was so brave through his treatment and thankfully is now in remission."

Set in the magnificent backdrop of Windsor Castle, Eton College and the majestic River Thames, the Royal Windsor Triathlon has grown to be one of the best races in Great Britain. The river swim is followed by a bike course that takes in a number of villages around beautiful Berkshire and returns through Windsor Great Park. The multi-lap run course winds around the Great Castle, over Eton Bridge and along Eton High Street, passing famous Eton College – all in all, the event takes in 900 years of British history.

"Research really is helping to improve treatment and increase survival rates for leukaemia sufferers and so I am proud to be taking part in this event for Leukaemia Research – it is such a worthy cause," adds Janet, who will be doing the sprint event.

Over 2,000 triathletes will take part in the event, with around 200 of them taking part for Leukaemia Research – the official charity for the event organised by Human Race. Together the Leukaemia Research Banana Army Triathlon team hopes to raise over £50,000 for the charity.
