Edinburgh-based company Standard Life has raised £150,000 for Leukaemia Research, one of its chosen charities of the year 2004. The company put its full support behind the campaign, encouraging employees to engage in a host of fundraising pursuits and generously matched the total amount raised pound for pound.
Accepting the cheque on behalf of Leukaemia Research at the Standard Life offices in Edinburgh, Michelle Lineker, wife of football ace and TV presenter Gary Lineker, said:
"Leukaemia Research’s pioneering work has an impact on the lives of people with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related disorders everywhere. It’s the dedication of fundraisers that makes this work possible allowing patients to live longer with their illness under control."
Enthusiastic staff dressed down for work with casual dress days, had a flutter on the Standard Life lottery and shared their earnings with payroll giving. More active team players took to the roads for the gruelling Edinburgh Marathon and the BUPA Great North Run. More leisurely athletes didn’t miss out on the fun either as everyone had the chance to raise cash and participate in Standard Life's own sponsored walk through Edinburgh.
"Standard Life’s money has enabled us to pay for an entire year of a project in Southampton, developing and testing DNA vaccines for blood cancers. This work is vital to our ongoing research. We’d like to thank Standard Life employees for their enthusiasm, the public for their generosity and the Company for selecting us as its chosen charity," said Cathy Gilman, Director of Fundraising, Leukaemia Research.
Karen Frost, Community Investment Manager at Standard Life said, "We are delighted at the great response from our employees and the fantastic support we have had from Leukaemia Research. All of our staff have been involved in raising money in some way and there has been a real sense of team effort and achievement."
