Yorkshire's most-loved ‘Calendar Girls’ are back with another revealing, alternative calendar for 2007.
Having hit the £1million target in 2004, the Yorkshire ladies have been working hard towards raising their second million for vital research into blood cancers, and today (Friday 7th April 2006) launched their new 2007 calendar based on the original calendar, ahead of Leukaemia Research’s Annual Conference in York tomorrow.
The original, world-renowned Alternative WI Calendar was published in 1999 for 2000 and was inspired by Angela Baker’s husband John, who sadly died of lymphoma in 1998.
“The original calendar really captured the public’s interest. Everywhere went we got asked – ‘When are you doing another calendar?’ and so we were persuaded to do another one to raise even more vital money for Leukaemia Research,” says Angela, Miss February.
“The calendar marked a turning point in what we were trying to achieve in John’s name. Raising £1million pounds was amazing and then when we unveiled a plaque in honour of John at the Leukaemia Research Centre for Epidemiology here in York it made it all worth it.
“However, for the many people the battle with leukaemia, the lymphomas and other blood cancers still goes on. So it means so much to us that we have the support to continue in helping fund important research for these serious diseases,” adds Angela.
The new 2007 calendar features a selection of new, never seen before images of the Baker’s half dozen, as well as some of the old, well-loved favourites.
Aside from posing for more pictures, the Girls have had a busy 2005. Shortly after his marriage to the Duchess of Cornwall in 2005, the Prince of Wales invited the Calendar Girls and many of their friends and family who had helped in their success, to a reception at Clarence House, to say thank you for their outstanding contribution to Leukaemia Research.
In November 2005, to the delight of her family and friends, Angela Baker married the Reverend Charles Knowles, a university friend of John Baker. Already 2006 has been busy for the Girls as they continue inspire the support of people throughout the world and continue to raise thousands of pounds for Leukaemia Research with sponsored walks, talks and personal appearances. More recently, the tireless work of the Girls inspired the Duchess of Cornwall to join her local Women’s Institute in Tetbury, near Highgrove.
Cathy Gilman, Director of Fundraising at Leukaemia Research, says: “We’re delighted the ladies have posed for another fantastic calendar. It’s tremendous that they continue to support Leukaemia Research and we know it will bring hope to the 110,000 people currently living with a blood cancer and their families throughout the UK.”
The new 2007 calendar is available to order priced £12 (inc. UK p&p) from Leukaemia Research by calling 020 7405 0101 or online at www.lrf.org.uk/calendargirls
